Creating Engaging Classrooms
Hands-on experiences for curious minds
The 2020-2021 Baltimore County Needs Assessment and the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County 2022 Needs Assessment both identified substance abuse as mental and physical health disparities.
After initial treatment, recovering from substance use is a critical activity during which a person learns how to maintain recovery/sobriety. Both parent and child wellbeing are negatively impacted when a parent is unable to regularly attend 12-step meetings where support is critical to sustaining sobriety. It is nothing less than learning a new way to live, to think and respond. When parents take children to an adult recovery meeting (a common occurrence), they are not able to fully concentrate, nor are other members of the group if children are disruptive. Further, children who frequent recovery meetings can become desensitized to substance abuse as
early as age five, setting them up for later vulnerability to substance abuse.
Safe, supervised childcare allows parents to fully participate in recovery while providing support to and alleviating stress on children. Childcare is provided free to families by Evolve KidsCare, removing a common barrier to participation.
